Planning your Redevelopment

Herons need good shoreline habitat to surviveTrout Lake, like all lakes, is a living entity. Any disturbance of the shoreline will have an impact on its well- being. Animals, such as this heron rely on shoreline cover and near-shore animals to survive. Undeveloped land on any urban lake is rare. Most development that occurs today is in the form of redevelopment of a property. Trout Lake is no different. "Home improvement" can cover a broad range of activities including dock or boathouse construction, septic system upgrades, shoreline alterations such as retaining walls or dredging, landscaping, building a deck or porch and putting an addition on a residence. Remember to take the needs of the "other" inhbabitants of your property when you redevelop your property.

All of these activities, and many others, require consultation and often a permit from one or more government agency. Details, such as permits, should be checked out at the planning stage of any project. Consultation with professionals from the appropriate agency will provide you with valuable information on how your plans meet local and provincial regulations. More importantly, their advice and recommendations will assist you in tailoring your project to minimize its disturbance to the shoreline. The less impact your project has on the shoreline, the better it is for the health of the lake and the more likely your permit will be approved.

An information bulletin, "The Trout Lake Fact Files", is available free of charge as a guide to redevelopment on Trout Lake. It will help you plan your redevelopment in such a way as to try and maintain the animal community that normally occupies the type of lands that you own. It contains details on the types of projects you may be considering, what permits are necessary and who you need to contact before undertaking any work on the shoreline. It may be obtained from any of the partners/agencies listed below:

  • Trout Lake Conservation Association
  • City of North Bay
  • Township of East Ferris
  • Ministry of Environment and Energy
  • Ministry of Natural Resources
  • North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority
  • North Bay and District Health Unit
