The South Shore of Lake Nipissing has been established as one of Ontario's premier vacation areas catering to the avid angler and boating enthusiast in summer, and to the ice - fisherman and snowmobiler in winter. The popularity of this part of Lake Nipissing is linked to the high nutrient load in the area due largely to runoff from the surrounding land. The high nutrient load as evidenced by recent water quality studies provides the foundation for this very productive ecosystem. Year round, anglers are lured to the South Shore area as the high fish population guarantees satisfaction.
The South Shore of Nipissing extends from Callander Bay, the most easterly portion of the lake to the South bay where the south river enters Lake Nipissing. The area is rich in History as the township of Nipissing was one of the first established areas on the lake.
Realizing the potential of the rich resources of the South Shore, the area was a natural for tourist camp operators interested in sharing the wealth of Lake Nipissing. One of the first lodges to operate here was the Waltonian Inn, built on a foundation of stones collected from the beach by Mr. and Mrs. Lechlitner in 1923. After many years of pleasing service to those seeking to experience true northern vacations, the original lodge burnt down in 1980. The new Waltonian Inn continues today to offer magnificent sunsets, safe sandy beaches and the best year-round fishing in northern Ontario.
