Located only 200 miles or a short 4 hour drive north of the hectic city life of Toronto, one finds the calming waters of Lake Nipissing. Renowned for its world class walleye fishing, Lake Nipissing is unparalleled for its excellent beaches, warm water, breathtaking sunsets and outstanding boating opportunities. Sailing and windsurfing on Nipissing are a natural given the large expanse of water and frequent high winds.

Formed during the Wisconsin ice-age, the events leading to the retreat of the ice mass are responsible for the physical topography of Lake Nipissing. As the lake basin was being formed, outflows also formed which allowed the prehistoric ocean to exit through the Ottawa valley. Glacial meltwater found its way out these outflows, dropping the water level in Nipissing. As water levels declined between 10,000 - 3,000 years ago, Lake Nipissing formed as a separate water body.

The great weight of the ice mass lifted and the land began to rise. This created a height of land between Lake Huron and the Ottawa River that until this time had provided the outflow from the lake. Lake Nipissing now drains westward into Georgian Bay through the French River.

This new watershed division would in future represent the most arduous part of the voyageur route. Fur traders burdened under 100 pound packs and huge canoes through 7 miles of mud, swamp and merciless insects through what is known as the La Vase Portage.
