TREES & FORESTS

On September 30, 1996, Mayor Jack Burrows unveiled the Laurier Woods trail sign. This special landmark celebrates the purchase of land intended to preserve the natural habitat of Laurier Woods.

The goal is to preserve the Laurier Woods in its natural state and protect the recreational and educational value of this unique forest and wetland area.

Why Leaves Change Color

Fall in the northern forest is a magical time of year. The leaves of the deciduous trees transform the hills into colorful works of art. This is all part of nature's seasonal plan.

During the summer, the tree carries nutrients to the leaves so they can process the sunlight. When the sunlight decreases as fall approaches, the nutrients are brought back into the truck and roots.

Gradually, a layer of cells forms over the base of the stem creating a barrier between the leaf and stem. This causes the leaves to stop producing chlorophyll and, as the chlorophyll breaks down, the leaves begin to change color. Not all leaves turn the same color and not all at the same time. The color varies according to temperature and amount of sunlight.

Four species of deciduous trees
